Florence, Colorado is approximately 10 miles from Canon City, and was originally built as a rugged, western mining town. It is now widely considered the Antique Capital of Colorado-housing many fine antique and gift stores.

    • Pioneer Day’s in September (with a grand parade, vendors, tractor pull, street dance and the salute to the pioneers) along with “Junktique” and “Outdoor Market”.

  • It’s located in the “Banana Belt”. The term “banana belt” is any segment of a larger geographic region that enjoys warmer weather conditions than the region as a whole, especially in the wintertime.   • 1870- arrival of railroads heading west, exporting coal from Coal Creek and Rockvale.
    Florence supported 5 brickyards and mines that built most of the surrounding towns during the 1880’s – the majority of the homes in Florence are pre-1930’s.
  • 1881 – oil was discovered – Florence boomed with oil wells and developing fields. It was the second oldest oil field in the U.S., and by 1890, Florence became known as “Derrick City” because of all the operating oil derricks.
  • 1892 – road was built to the gold mines in Cripple Creek, hauling miners in and ore out.
  • 1894 -a railroad opened (known as the Gold Belt Line) in Phantom Canyon to bring gold from Cripple Creek to the railroad in Florence. Phantom Canyon has become a favorite spot for locals to camp, hike, and picnic as well as a scenic drive to Cripple Creek and Victor. You may even spot bighorn sheep, wild turkey, elk, or the occasional mountain lion or bear!
